Description

Agricultural crops help to feed the world’s population. Growing them efficiently to provide good yields and quality whilst limiting environmental damage is a balance all farmers are tasked with. Using legumes in a rotation can help reduce some inputs like nitrogen fertiliser which requires a lot of energy to produce. Plants (and soil microbes) respond differently to soil pH (soil acidity) and optimising this, as well as the range of agricultural crops being grown, can improve the efficiency of the overall production system and lead to longer term improvements in soil “health”. As part of Fascination of Plants, colleagues from Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) will demonstrate a number of these factors and explain how they are interlinked.
