Policy Review: Rural and Island Policy in Scotland since the Second World War

This presentation provides a comprehensive review of policy interventions for Scotland’s rural areas and islands since the 1950s. Based on this review, it provides some suggestions for how policies may evolve in future. This review forms the basis of future work in both ReRIC and NISRIE. The former will explore three persistent challenges which have plagued many rural and island communities in Scotland for decades, namely a lack of affordable housing, demographic decline and exclusion and marginalisation and provide new insights on how these challenges may be tackled. The latter will gather and analyse data and provide new insights on Scotland’s rural and island economies.
