Personal profile
Research interests
I am a researcher and lecturer with over 30 years experience in crop and soil systems research, teaching and KE delivery. I am programme lead for the distance learning MSc in Agricultural Professional Practice, co-lead and teach into the recently commisioned Sustainablity in Agriculture & Business distance learning MSc and have been teaching into the Organic Farming distance learning MSc for over 20 years. I also have some invlovement in lecturing to undergraduate students. My research and teaching responsibilties focus on systems based approaches, primarily involving low input cropping systems and how these can be managed more efficiently in terms of the balance between production, economics and environmental factors. I am also interested in how to optimise the integration of crops, grassland and livestock, as well as aspects linked to a closed circle economy. Areas of interest include:
- Diversity in cropping and broader agricultural systems
- Rotational effects on cropping systems, both organic and non-organic, including regen approaches.
- Environmental impacts of crops, their varieties and their role in rotations within agricultural ecosystems.
- Crop / soil nutrient and carbon dynamics within cropping / farming systems (particularly N, P, trace elements and organic matter).
- Improving the optimization / integration of leguminous species / varieties into cropping systems with an emphasis on intercropping.
- Home grown protein cropping options
- Cover crops & green manures
- Alternative approaches to crop nutrient supply and pest or pathogen control, including an interest in closed circle economy / wastestreams as well as biostimulants
