Project Details
Description
This project will measure methane emissions, using SRUC's UKRI-funded portable accumulation chambers (PAC), from mixed breed, lowland lambs produced by the industry partner (Farmgene) based in England. The project aims to combine the investigation of these new phenotypes with an accelerated breeding programme, using reproductive technologies already in use by Farmgene, to fast track the development of low methane emitting sheep. Animals will be selected for future breeding based on PAC measurement information and estimated breeding values available from the Sheep Improvement Limited (SIL) genetic evaluations (through which the Farmgene flock is recorded). This work will help to improve our understanding of the rates of change potentially achievable in the Farmgene flock through the combined use of these different technologies.
