Project Details
Description
The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) is a statutory levy board, funded by farmers, growers and others in the supply chain to help the industry succeed in business through providing independent evidence based solutions to current and future problems. The AHDB Cereals and Oilseeds Recommended Lists (RLs) provide levy payers and the wider industry with independent information on the characteristics and market options for new cereal and oilseed varieties: for further information see https://ahdb.org.uk/rl
The Recommended Lists project is run as a consortium of AHDB, British Society of Plant Breeders (BSPB) the Maltsters Association of Great Britain (magb) and UK Flour Millers (formally known as nabim) and is governed by a legal agreement between the consortium partners.
The information provided by the RLs enables levy payers to select variety’s that are optimal for their cropping system and meet the requirements of their local market, maximising productivity and ensuring a reliable supply of grain into the supply chain. RLs also facilitate the uptake of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) through providing trusted information on varietal pest and disease resistance and drive environmental benefits through increased resource use efficiency.
RLs are published as on-line RL tables, as a printed booklet and through a mobile phone App. There is also a ‘harvest results’ service that delivers results of individual trials as soon as they are harvested and on-line tools and videos to assist in understanding of the RL programme and to aid variety selection.
Varieties are assessed through field trials and sample quality testing. AHDB inspects all trials to ensure they are fit for purpose. Contractors return data to AHDB who are responsible for data analysis and validation. The results are then presented to a series for Crop Committees comprised of growers, agronomists and technical experts who decide which varieties are suitable for recommendation.
The RL is run as a series of consecutive five year projects. The current five-year program of crop trials for yield and crop quality ends at harvest 2021. This specification is for the procurement of new contracts to run trials for harvest 2022 to harvest 2026.
