Developing further evidence requirements for precision bred animals

Project Details

Description

Last year we completed a Defra-funded project that produced welfare indicator lists and an analysis of the current situation regarding precision-bred animals in England. The proposed study will go further. the proposed objectives are:
1. Establish links with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (ASPA) – assess the possible role of the Home Office in regulating animal welfare
2. Assessments of animal health and welfare for marketing authorisations  - decide on acceptable thresholds for differences in welfare indicators between PB and control animals and numbers to be sampled.
3. Post-market reporting on precision bred animals and their progeny - investigate what information on welfare is gathered by commercial companies and how it can be reported.
4. Stakeholder engagement - webinars and interviews with stakeholders
5. Future work - make recommendations for future work.
