Description
The rural economy and rural society in Europe rely heavily on Small Ruminant (SR) systems. Despite
continued advances in precision livestock agriculture (PLF) and new digital technologies (DT), SR
husbandry and management practices lag behind other livestock sectors that apply these technologies.
Therefore, Sm@RT proposes to bring SR husbandry and management practices into the digital farming
era by setting up a Thematic Network.
The overall objective of the Sm@RT project is thus to develop a long-term self-sustainable European
international network on the use of PLF technologies and new DT in the small ruminant (sheep and goats)
sector. This network is designed to encourage knowledge exchange, uptake and cross-fertilisation among a
wide range of farmers and practitioners along the SR value chain, as well as to value input and knowledge
of farmers for farmers. Sm@RT aims to widely disseminate practical management solutions and
innovative practices applying PLF technologies and DT to facilitate a long-term uptake by farmers and
practitioners and to make the SR sector more attractive for technologies providers and new entrant
farmers.
