Abstract

A 1‐year‐old pygmy goat presented with progressive alopecia, skin ulceration and lichenification over the neck, face and body. Empirical treatment for parasitic and fungal causes of skin disease did not produce clinical improvement, prompting a full diagnostic investigation. Histologically, there was a severe granulomatous mural folliculitis. Polymerase chain reaction for ovine herpesvirus‐2 on affected skin yielded a positive result. Following this diagnosis, the goat deteriorated clinically, resulting in euthanasia. Postmortem examination and further histology revealed systemic lesions of malignant catarrhal fever, as well as lesions of cytotoxic interface dermatitis in additional skin samples.
