Abstract
Scanning surveillance (SS) is the term used for laboratory-based monitoring of disease trends and incidents. It is a collective, collaborative activity involving farmers, veterinary practitioners, laboratory-based veterinary investigation officers and a wide range of supporting professionals, all of whom benefit from the information that is generated and shared by this process. SS of cattle diseases in GB is characterised by a large number of diagnostic submissions and by sophisticated analysis of results. This enables changes in disease trends and possible new diseases and disease presentations to be detected and managed promptly.
