Phytomining consists in the use of hyperaccumulator plants for recovery of valuable metals. Due to the abundance of ultramafic areas and hyperaccumulators worldwide, nickel is the element that has the greatest potential for the development of phytomining. The implementation of a nickel phytomining system in Portugal constitutes a viable hypothesis due to the occurrence of ultramafic complexes in the country and the existence of an endemic hyperaccumulator species, Alyssum pintodasilvae. Phytomining-related studies in Portugal are scarce, however, they suggest that the Trás-os-Montes massifs exhibit potential for implementation of this plant-based technology, which can constitute a source of income for local communities.
