Abstract

This working paper focuses on data available at the local authority level to provide a regional context for each case study in the 'On the Margins' project. Key indicators are examined to understand employment and income data for each local authority area, as well as available information about access to
services and housing affordability. The three local authority areas are:

1. Na h-Eileanan Siar – Outer Hebrides (Harris case study);
2. Perth and Kinross (Blairgowrie and the Glens case study); and
3. Northumberland (North Tyne Valley case study).

The literature review (Working Paper 1) noted the difficulties that can be encountered when trying to find income and employment statistics at small enough scales to identify key issues in rural areas.

The fieldwork will interrogate the local authority data at a finer scale with interviewees in the case study areas.
